Well it depends on the state and area. According to the BLS guide (see source) “Median hourly earnings in May 2006 for salaried hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists, including tips and commission, were $10.25. The middle 50 percent earned between $7.92 and $13.75. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $6.68, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $18.78.”
This is a general estimate and may differ for your area. I suggest contacting a local cosmetologist and asking them whether or not they would recommend it.

I have been in this profession for 35 years.
Yes you can make a very good money in this profession.
I would suggest you start out with a well known salon that will help you get extra training beyond the basics of school.
If you have passion in what you do you will do just fine with this business.
